Abilene

Happy 4th of July!  God Bless America!

Made it safely to Abilene on the 1st!  We were told to pull into site #21 and my cousin, Bobby, had already gone done and sprayed for mosquitos and weed whacked the area for us.  But we pulled in and opened the electrical box and it was 30 amp only.  So I called the office and they moved us to #47 and I am glad they did.  There were no other sites beside us and we looked like we were all alone in a field.

But ultimately, site #21 was a 50/30 amp, but the box was on a telephone pole.  The box we looked at was no longer in use.  If you aren’t using an electrical box, why leave it there is my question. They don’t keep this place up very well at all.  I called and told her I wanted my area mowed and she sent her son and his friend down within the hour and they mowed our whole area.  That was good, but the sites across from us had knee high grass and it never was mowed while we were there.  They did mow a field and there were people playing soccer out there in the evenings.

This RV park is in the flight path of the Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene.  They have planes doing touch and goes all day and night.  Some nights until midnight or later.  They are pretty cool to watch as they get pretty close.  They have C130 cargo planes and jets.  The cargo planes are prop planes and they aren’t loud at all, but the B-1s are jets and they are very loud.

Bobby, my cousin, bought a new smoker (one that takes the wood pellets and has a computer) and he was planning on cooking a lot while we were there to see him.

He coulda told me that, I’d bought tickets to a cheese farm!  So, I made plans without telling him and he made plans without telling me.  He had ribs for Thursday, Hamburgers for Friday and Brisket on Saturday all planned. He had no sides mind you, just the meat!  I told him I could have him home by 1:00 to cook the ribs if he went to the cheese farm with us. (I lied - Dublin is almost a 2 hour drive from Tye).

So about this cheese farm.  I follow this craft cheese maker in Dublin, Texas named Veldenhuizen Cheese and had received an email about a new Hatch Green Chili Gouda (YES, I said Hatch Green Chili Gouda!!!!) they were pulling out of the cave on Tuesday.  They were having a celebration with it and I really wanted to be there.  But instead I bought tickets to tour the cheese making parts of the farm and spent the day there on Thursday.  We got to taste any cheese we wanted to taste.  All of their cheeses are grass fed and raw sheep or cow milk. They give their whey to a distillery in Granbury, Texas called The Local Goat where they make vodka, gin and rum with it.  They also sell their beef, pork and lamb there. We got to see them preparing their Jalapeño Cheddar, which they add Habaneros as well.  It is amazing.  They make some of the best blue cheese I have ever tasted.  It was a very interesting tour.  They were also smoking a pig on a huge pit for their 4th of July party.  They were having live music and everything.  Hope they didn’t have over 100 people because that is how they spread the COVID you know.

We finally got back to Tye with our bag of amazing cheeses about 4:00, which meant the ribs would not be ready until 9:00.  I whipped up some coleslaw and and we waited on the ribs.  It was a pretty good day. So we played games and waited.  Cooking on this pit is like nothing I have ever done before.  The pit stays at the correct temperature all by itself.

Friday was hamburger day and we had invited by Aunt and Uncle over, but they decided to stay home and safe from the germs.  My nephew, Dallas,  lives in Abilene, near my aunt and uncle actually, and we invited him and his family.  Come to find out, my brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Diane, were coming up from Mathis to visit on Friday.  So they did not make it Friday, but made it on Saturday.  Since we had so many hamburgers and boudin links and so few people, Friday, we took two patties and stuffed them with blue cheese and put bacon on them. Pretty good burger! Glad we didn’t have to share.

Saturday is brisket day and we had a crowd! I had more family show up.  My second cousin from Post, Texas, Billy, came out and brought his girlfriend as well as Dallas and his whole crew.  We had good food and good company.  Another good day!

So after all this family time and cooking we laid low on Sunday.  Dennis and I took Billy to breakfast and did laundry at the laundromat that Bobby uses.  You have to load a card and use it at this place and we put $10 dollars on it, but the large capacity washer costs $10 a load.  YES, I SAID $10 A LOAD! The small washers were cheaper but I tried them and my stuff wouldn’t fit.  We were able to combine two of our loads for the dryer, but that made our laundry bill $40.  We actually had $20 left on the card and gave it to Bobby, so it really cost us $60 bucks to do one weeks worth of laundry.  I HAVE NEVER . . .

Monday I got to go get a pedicure!  Found a place, Dee Dee Lashes and Nails, with great reviews and they had a lot of measures in place to make sure neither of us got the COVID.  They had a clear shower curtain around each chair and we both wore masks as well.  They even let me try some of their Vietnamese coffee.  It was pretty good. I will definitely go back to that place if I ever need a pedi in Abilene.

Tuesday we spent the day getting things together to put a new seat on my kayak.  It is a great seat! Can’t wait to use it while we are in Bridgeport!  Our campground is on the lake there.

We had the RV washed early Wednesday morning and then we were off!

So long Abilene and all my family!  Glad we got to spend time with ya!
