We spent November and December catching up with family and friends in the Beaumont and Houston areas. So glad to see everyone after so long.
January 28, 2021 - Off again.
We started back up on our travels early this year due to some deaths in the family. January has been very unkind to our family as I know it likely has been to many of yours. We lost a dear friend, Chuck Devenzio of Nederland, Tx. on January 16, Dennis’ Uncle Frank Colmer of Shreveport, La. on January 17 as well as two of my uncles, Uncle Eugene ‘Bud’ Creech of Abilene, Tx. on January 24 and my Uncle Frank Parten of Norman Park, Georgia, on January 27. So, as bad as 2020 was, this year is starting off pretty rough! It has to get better is all I can say.
After leaving Uncle Bud’s funeral which was held in Woodson, Texas near Breckenridge, we headed back south to Lake Whitney. We stay at the Thousand Trails there and it really is a great place. There is plenty of space between spots and lots of woods and trails to explore. They even have a special area in the park for campers with horses. A lot of their trails are maintained well enough to take your horse through them. One trail we lost our way, as it was not nearly as maintained as the others we traveled, but we found home. It has been in the 60’s so plenty warm to get out and enjoy. I even had to remove my hoodie on Tuesday. We hiked 5 miles through this hilly terrain. It felt great. With rain and cold in Beaumont we just didn’t get as much exercise during November and December. We did take our bikes down and since we were staying at the Gulf Coast RV Park near Ford Park, we would ride over to the softball fields and then down around Ford Arena. It was only a 2 mile trek though, but better than nothing.
Our plans right now are to head south in Texas around Goliad and Corpus Christi and even around to Big Bend before it gets too hot to enjoy it there. After that, we are still a little up in the air. We will start off west and go up through New Mexico, Arizona Utah, Idaho (and Yellowstone) Montana and North Dakota (we didn’t go that far north last year) and then we may head further west to Washington and Oregon or turn east and go through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. We will just have to see how we feel when we get there.
We are really hoping the whole country makes a turn for the better and, of course, we will stay abreast of developments before we head to an area. It is no fun if you can’t get out and see things while we travel.
We spent a few days in near Angleton and were able to hook up with a long lost friend, Gena Wiesnerski. She and I went to high school together in League City and she now lives in San Leon. We met up at her house for a drink and then headed out to Gillhooley’s for supper and a few more drinks. Delicious! I got to try everyone else’s food. I love a smorgasbord! We then found out that our friend Ted Mahavier was in town visiting his mother Jean, so we headed over there to introduce Gena to her neighbor. They live a block away from each other. We found out that Ted has an RV slip ready anytime we want to spend some time on the coast. Now we have friends with hook-ups for us. It was a really great night.
Happy Valentine’s Day. We will be heading to Goliad today. Packing up in 40 degrees and it should be close to the same when we get there. I hate moving in the cold - not that I have done that much. I don’t do it intentionally. We headed south because it gets cold in Beaumont in February. This isn’t working out that well for us. LOL - but we will be in the teens while we are there, but Beaumont will be in the single digits. I guess we dodged a little bullet.
Happy Trails Friends.
