We took off to Biloxi and Gulfport today. I had hopes of seeing some antebellum homes of the old south, but what I saw was empty lots and new construction. Some very nice homes of the old days, but just not the mansions I remember as a kid. A fog had rolled in and even the sailboats in the harbor seemed to disappear into the fog. It was pretty eerie.
We went to see Beauvoir, the final home of the only president of the Confederate States, Andrew Jackson.

It was an interesting tour with a Docent dressed in period costume. The location also houses his Presidential Library and museum. The house actually served as a home for confederate soldiers and their widows for many years before becoming a museum and the grounds has a cemetery for those veterans and an unknown soldier.

They called them inmates, I found that a little strange - LOL. I would recommend it if you are ever in the area with a couple of hours to spend on the grounds and in the museum.
We wanted to take the ferry over to Ship Island and tour Fort Massachusetts, but no ferries run this time of year. I guess it is safe to say nobody lives on that island. Besides, the fog may have been a problem if they were running.
I am also a big fan of lighthouses, so we wanted to see the Biloxi Lighthouse. I was not impressed. It is only 64 feet tall! As you can tell by the beautiful blue skies in this photo, I snagged it from the internet. I was so disappointed in the size I forgot to even photograph it. You know for lighthouses, size should matter!

I can’t say I remember seeing one so small. I had to look that up. At first I thought maybe it was a replica because, #1 it is in the middle of the road and #2 it being so dang short. I found one directory that indicated lighthouses had to be at least 13 feet high. REALLY! I think they should be taller than that, but hey, I am not in charge!
After that I needed a little Jimmy Buffet time, so we headed over to Margaritville for a snack and refreshments!
It looks like a cool place. The pool area would be amazing for kids. The slide looked like a lot of fun. Of course, none of this was open either, and you have to be a hotel guest to play in the pool.
All in all another good day on the Gulf Coastt!
